August is shifting gears in Centennial. The long stretch of summer evenings is beginning to bump into school calendars, community meetings and those first hints that fall is waiting just offstage. For the week of August 10, here are several fresh Centennial happenings and neighborhood updates worth knowing.
Centennial Families Head Back to School
For families in western Centennial, the backpacks come out this week. Littleton Public Schools begins the 2026–27 school year on Tuesday, August 11, with elementary students also following an early-release schedule that day. Sandburg Elementary in Centennial is among the schools holding back-to-school activities as families make the transition. (Littleton Public Schools)
Cherry Creek Schools families have a little more runway. Teacher workdays are underway this week, while student phase-in begins the week of August 17. Families should check the official Cherry Creek Schools calendar or their individual school calendar for grade-specific schedules. (Cherry Creek Schools)
Translation for everyone else: expect school-zone traffic and more morning activity around Centennial neighborhoods again.
Centennial City Council Meets Tuesday
Residents interested in what is happening behind the civic curtain can attend the Centennial City Council meeting Tuesday, August 11, at the Centennial Civic Center, 13133 E. Arapahoe Road. Study sessions typically begin at 6 p.m., followed by the regular meeting at 7 p.m. (Centennial)
Meeting information and upcoming public meetings are available through the City of Centennial calendar. It is one of the simplest ways to follow decisions affecting the community without relying on neighborhood rumor confetti.
Say Goodbye to Summer at Piney Creek Hollow Park
Friday night brings a distinctly Centennial sendoff.
Sunset on Summer takes over Piney Creek Hollow Park, 6140 S. Tower Road, on Friday, August 14 from 6 to 10 p.m. The free, all-ages event from Trails Park and Recreation District features food trucks, local performances and plenty of space to gather with neighbors. No registration is required. (Trails Park and Recreation District)
See details through Trails Park and Recreation District.
Shakespeare Goes Wild in Centennial
Also beginning Friday, Centennial gets its own outdoor theater season.
Shakespeare in the Wild opens The Comedy of Errors at deKoevend Park near Goodson Recreation Center. Performances begin at 7 p.m. August 14–16, with additional performances continuing later in August. Admission is free, although RSVPs are encouraged. (Shakespeare In The W)
This marks the nonprofit company's fifth season bringing free professional Shakespeare to Centennial. This year's production leans into one of Shakespeare's fastest and most playful comedies, built around mistaken identities and escalating confusion. (OnStage Colorado)
Visit Shakespeare in the Wild for performance information and RSVPs.
From school bells to city business, food trucks to Shakespeare under the trees, Centennial is moving into its late-summer rhythm this week, with plenty of reasons to stay close to home, look around and connect with the community.

Great to see so much happening locally. Makes me glad we moved to Centennial.
Hoping the food trucks have more vegetarian options this year. Last time they ran out really fast.
Wish the events covered more than just west Centennial. Anything fun coming up east of Parker Rd?
Great question! While this week's highlights focus on the west side, keep an eye on our future updates for events in eastern Centennial, Trails Park and Recreation District, for example, often hosts happenings east of Parker Rd.
I appreciate the reminders about phase-in for Cherry Creek. Always confusing when every grade starts on a different day.
Christina M.I always have to triple-check the start dates too. The Cherry Creek calendar helps but wish it was all one start day!
So cool that it's already the fifth year for Shakespeare in the Wild. Huge thanks to the folks who make it happen!
Does anyone remember when the city used to do summer movie nights at Piney Creek? This event reminds me of that.
We went to the council meeting last month and they really do answer resident questions. Worth going if you care about local stuff.
Kathy L.That’s good to hear. I’ve never been but was thinking about going this month. Glad they really listen.
Anyone know if Sunset on Summer allows dogs? Would love to bring mine along to the park.
Joel MartinezI saw on the park district’s page that leashed dogs are welcome for most events, but you might want to double-check just in case!
Every year I forget how insane the drop-off lines get that first week. Good luck parents and neighbors!
Kind of wish the city sent out reminders about meeting dates by text. Easy to forget in the back-to-school rush!
Colleen D.That would be so helpful. I missed last month’s meeting and had no idea until the next day. Wish the city would do text alerts or something similar.
Will there be parking problems around deKoevend Park on show nights? Never been but don’t want to circle forever.
Glad our city has such a lively August every year. Hope they keep adding more free events for all ages.
Thank you for the kind words! Centennial’s event planners continue to work hard to offer inclusive, free activities for everyone in the community.
We’ve gone to Sunset on Summer a few times now, it’s always a great mix of ages and music. Crossing fingers the weather holds!
Stacy LinSame here! Last year we lucked out with a perfect evening. Hoping for no rain this time. Always love the food trucks too.
Sunset on Summer really does bring neighbors of all ages together, fingers crossed for a perfect evening under the stars again this year!
Comedy of Errors is an underrated one for Shakespeare. Hope the weather holds out for outdoor shows.
Can you bring dogs to Shakespeare in the Wild shows? Thinking it could be a family night out if our pup can join.
Back to school already... My kids aren't thrilled but I'm ready for a little bit of routine again!
Glad Centennial offers these fun community things, but wish more of them were on weekends. Can't always make it during the week.
Love having food trucks at Piney Creek Hollow but the lines get wild. Get there early if you want the good stuff.
Stay alert! Morning drop-off traffic is about to get crazy again. Good luck to all the parents out there.
Ben G.Seriously! The crosswalk area by Sandburg is always packed too. Hope everyone takes it slow this week.
Never heard of Shakespeare in the Wild before! Free shows in the park sound perfect for a summer evening.
Olga V.It’s really fun! Last summer they did it near the rec center too. Bring a blanket and some snacks, it gets busy but it’s a good time.
Looking forward to food trucks at Sunset on Summer but wish the event went a little later into August.
charlieb99Yeah, I would've liked it later too. Feels like summer events end way too soon once school starts up.
Sandburg Elementary does a great job with their back to school events. The teachers are always so welcoming.
My kids are pumped for the phase-in days at Cherry Creek, but I’m just trying to sort out everyone’s new schedule. So many calendars!
Do they post city council agendas ahead of time? I’ve got questions about that lot on Briarwood and missed last meeting.
I wish more places would host free, family events like Sunset on Summer. Community stuff makes me appreciate living here.
Is anyone else sad summer is ending already? I’m not ready for the early mornings again lol.
We hear you, the summer seems to fly by faster every year! Hopefully, some of these fun August events will help make the transition a bit easier.
The Comedy of Errors is hilarious, went last year and the cast was awesome. Highly recommend catching a performance if you can.
Thanks for sharing your experience! 'The Comedy of Errors' really is a crowd favorite, and the cast brings so much energy to the park each year.
I appreciate the Centennial calendar tips. Following city events is way less confusing now that everything’s in one place online.
Cherry Creek always starts a bit later than the others. Makes it tricky when you have kids in different districts!
That’s definitely a challenge for families, each district’s calendar has its quirks, so double-checking those official schedules is always a must.
Lucy ValdezI know what you mean! Our neighbor deals with the juggling act every August. At least pickup lines aren’t too crazy the first week?
Heads up drivers, those school zones will be busy again starting Tuesday. Please slow down near Sandburg and anywhere with school signs up!
A great reminder, school zones around places like Sandburg Elementary will absolutely be busier, so extra caution makes a real difference.
I’ve never been to Shakespeare in the Wild but now I’m tempted. Free theater is such a treat, especially outdoors in August.
You should definitely give it a try! Shakespeare in the Wild makes theater accessible and memorable right in the heart of Centennial.
Glad to see city council meetings mentioned. Folks always ask about what’s getting built, but hardly ever show up. Info is all out there!
Absolutely! All meeting details and agendas are posted online, and attending is a powerful way to stay informed about decisions affecting our neighborhoods.
Thanks for listing all the events. I always forget about the city council meetings. Going to try and stop by this week.
We're glad the listings are helpful, city council meetings are a great way to stay connected to what's happening locally, and hope to see you there!
The event at Piney Creek Hollow Park sounds perfect for the kids to run off some energy before school starts. We’ll be there for the food trucks!
Cherry Creek seems to start later every year, haha. Now we have two different back-to-school schedules in our house!
Reminder to everyone: slow down in school zones! Saw folks zipping down Arapahoe last year when kids were out.
Mike CarringtonThanks for reminding folks. I live near a school and it gets wild in the mornings. Wish more drivers paid attention to the lights.
Love outdoor Shakespeare! Comedy of Errors is so much fun. Free theater in the park is such a nice treat.
tara_hSame! We bring lawn chairs and a picnic. The actors are great every year, it’s a fun night out.
I cannot believe school starts this early for Littleton! Kids barely got a summer. Good luck to all the parents adjusting back to the school routine.
Centennial council meetings are actually really interesting. If you've never gone, give it a try. You get to hear about all sorts of local stuff.
Absolutely agree, the meetings offer an inside look at local decisions and community projects, making them well worth attending for anyone interested in Centennial's future.
Wow, already back to school for Littleton schools? Feels like summer just started. Good luck to all the kiddos!
Excited for Sunset on Summer at Piney Creek Hollow! The food trucks last year were so good. Hope there will be tacos again.
We love hearing that, and yes, with several food trucks lined up for Sunset on Summer, you can expect a tasty variety, including tacos!
