The week of August 10–16, 2026 brings a noticeable change of rhythm to Centennial. Backpacks are replacing pool bags for some families, City business continues to shape what comes next, one neighborhood library is temporarily closing its doors, and there are still plenty of reasons to enjoy these long Colorado evenings.

It is one of those weeks when summer and fall seem to occupy the same room. Here is what Centennial residents should have on their radar.

What’s New: School Is Back for Part of Centennial

For families in Littleton Public Schools, Tuesday, August 11, marks the beginning of the 2026–27 school year. At Centennial’s Arapahoe High School, freshmen and new students begin with Link Crew orientation Monday before the full school returns Tuesday. Athletic Night follows Wednesday, with a student Back-to-School Dance Friday evening. (Littleton Public Schools)

Meanwhile, Centennial families in Cherry Creek Schools are still in preparation mode. August 10–14 are teacher workdays, with school phase-in beginning August 17. Some individual Centennial schools are also holding meet-and-greet events this week, so families should check their specific school calendar rather than assuming every campus follows exactly the same first-day schedule. (Heritage Elementary School)

The result is a staggered back-to-school week across Centennial. For everyone on the road, that means it is also time to reacquaint ourselves with school zones, buses, crosswalks and slightly busier mornings.

What’s Happening: Centennial City Council Meets

Residents interested in the decisions shaping Centennial can follow the City of Centennial calendar for the City Council meeting scheduled Tuesday, August 11, at the Centennial Civic Center.

Local government rarely arrives with flashing lights, but decisions made there eventually become roads, services, budgets, development policies and community priorities. Following even one meeting or agenda is an easy way to replace “I wonder what the City is doing about that?” with something considerably more useful: information. (Centennial, CO)

Good to Know: Castlewood Library Temporarily Closes

One practical change begins this week. Castlewood Library at 6739 S. Uinta Street in Centennial is temporarily closed from August 9 through October 31. Arapahoe Libraries currently lists the location as closed until November 1. Residents who normally use Castlewood should check other Arapahoe Libraries locations for holds, programs, study space and other services during the closure. (Arapahoe Libraries)

What’s Next: Centennial Keeps Moving

Drivers along East Arapahoe Road should continue watching for construction activity associated with the Lone Tree Creek Trail Underpass between Revere Parkway and Potomac Street. The City says intermittent off-peak lane closures will continue as crews build a dedicated pedestrian and bicycle connection beneath Arapahoe Road. Completion is estimated for early spring 2027. (Centennial, CO)

And while school schedules are returning, summer has not packed its suitcase yet. Centennial Center Park’s splash pad remains open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Labor Day, giving families an easy, free option for an after-school cooldown. (Centennial, CO)

This week’s Centennial Pulse is really about transition. Some neighbors are heading back to classrooms. Others are following City decisions, adjusting familiar routines or squeezing one more golden evening out of August.

Know what’s new. See what’s next. And perhaps most importantly, keep finding small ways to feel connected to the Centennial community we share.

Love that there are still summer evenings left. Backyard grill and a trip to the splash pad sounds just right this week.

That sounds like the perfect way to savor what’s left of summer, enjoy every golden August evening and the splash pad while it’s open!

Will there be any alternative Castlewood library events at other locations or outdoors during the closure? My book group is wondering.

    • AC
      AmiLynne CarrollAuthor· Aug 9, 6:36 PM

Great question, during Castlewood’s closure, Arapahoe Libraries encourages groups to check other branch calendars for events, and some book groups and programs may be relocated. It's worth reaching out to your librarian to discuss options for alternate meeting spaces.

Our family tradition is getting ice cream after the first day. Glad the splash pad is still going so we can double up!

D StewartThat sounds like such a fun tradition! My kids love the splash pad too, so we might have to steal this idea. Hope you all have a great start to the school year!

Link Crew at Arapahoe was super helpful for my son last year. Props to the older students volunteering for it.

Glad to see the underpass project pushing forward. Crossing on bike right now is honestly pretty sketchy.

We agree, safe bike and pedestrian connections are a big step forward for Arapahoe Road, and we're glad the city is prioritizing the underpass for spring 2027.

Never went to a city council meeting before but maybe I should. Seems like it actually impacts our day-to-day more than you'd think.

    • AC
      AmiLynne CarrollAuthor· Aug 8, 11:02 AM

Absolutely, city council decisions shape everything from roads to recreation, and attending even once can provide insights into what’s changing in Centennial.

      Janet R.· Aug 9, 1:04 PM

Angie LeeYou definitely should! I went once just to see what it's like and learned a lot. It's pretty low-key, but you see how decisions get made.

Rob GagnonSame boat here. Our kids are split between the two districts and it gets so confusing every August. Would be great if they synced up at least a bit more!

    • AC
      AmiLynne CarrollAuthor· Aug 9, 5:44 PM

We hear you, the staggered start dates can complicate planning for families in both districts. Each district sets its schedule independently, but checking individual school calendars can help with some of the confusion.

    Brendan S.· Aug 6, 5:53 AM

City council meetings could use more people tuning in. Last time I checked, there were like six folks in the audience. More voices can only help.

  • MJ

Splash pad still going till Labor Day? My kids are obsessed! Love that the city keeps it open a bit longer.

    • AC

Bummed about Castlewood closing, but Koelbel Library isn’t too far. Anyone know if their study rooms are good?

    • AC
      AmiLynne CarrollAuthor· Aug 6, 1:08 PM

Koelbel Library is a great alternative, its study rooms are popular and can be reserved in advance, so you should find a quiet spot there while Castlewood is closed.

Ron WalkerSame here, Ron. I wish the city posted even bigger signs about those projects. A few times last year I ended up stuck mid-ride because of surprise detours! Stay safe out there.

We’ll miss Castlewood Library! It’s our go to for storytime with my kids. Hoping the other branches aren’t too crowded now.
