Centennial, Colorado, has launched Fat Marmot Week, a playful event that celebrates the beloved yellow-bellied marmot.

Residents now turn their attention from Fat Bear Week to honor their own alpine mascots, spotlighting marmots as they prepare for their winter hibernation by packing on the pounds.

Locals and scientists observe as these quirky rodents grow from five or six pounds in spring to more than double that by summer’s end.

Fat Marmot Week includes community voting, creative marmot names, and research tags, making the contest fun and educational.

Yet, concerns remain after recent poor winters left dens exposed and marmot numbers low, highlighting changing mountain environments.

Ultimately, the week encourages both local unity and awareness, shining a light on the resilience—and vulnerability—of Colorado’s alpine wildlife.

Stewardship is big but it doesn’t have to be hard. I’ll definitely be more conscious about what I leave behind, especially at events.
